 REFLECTION

Experience
My experience in the Advanced Typography class has been quite enriching. Initially, I had heard that the lecturer, Mr. Vinod, was a very serious person. However, upon meeting him, I found him to be a nice and approachable lecturer. While he does take certain aspects very seriously, it ultimately benefits us by ensuring we produce the highest quality work and assignments.

As a credit transfer student, I had only learned basic typography before this class. Mr. Vinod’s teaching expanded my knowledge significantly, showing me how typography truly functions in our lives. At first, I wasn't very interested in typography, finding it overly rigid and difficult to appreciate. I expected strict guidelines this semester, but the Advanced Typography module was surprisingly flexible, offering a great deal of freedom and independence.

I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on type design tasks, which made the module more engaging compared to creating layouts or arranging type. Overall, this has been a rewarding experience. I discovered a newfound interest in type design and gained valuable typography knowledge that enhances my work in other areas.

Observations
I noticed that I still spend a significant amount of time on layouts. Unlike generating type design ideas, creating layouts does not come as naturally to me and often takes longer than expected to complete typographic systems. I also realized that producing high-quality work requires resilience and determination to achieve my desired outcomes.

Despite enjoying Advanced Typography more than the basic module, I experienced more moments of burnout, which demanded extra perseverance. Fortunately, the engaging nature of the tasks helped me push through these challenges.

Findings
I gained the most knowledge from Task 3, which focused on exploration and application. Compared to the other tasks, Task 3 was quite challenging but also the most interesting for me. Designing my own typeface was something I had never considered before, but now I have successfully done it. Additionally, I acquired extra knowledge about FontLab. It took me a week to learn how to use FontLab, but it turned out to be less difficult than I initially thought.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed learning typography. The constant challenges pushed me to my limits and allowed me to create impressive and high-quality artwork.
