 INTRUCTIONS

Requirements:

Choose a set of objects (e.g., Lego pieces, buttons, marbles, rubber bands, coins, M&Ms).
Categorize the objects based on 2 to 5 factors such as:

  • Color
  • Shape
  • Pattern
  • Other quantifiable characteristics

  1. Arrange the objects in a structured layout to clearly present the data.

  2. Label and annotate the display with relevant indicators using pens or markers to help visualize the quantities.

  3. Random objects before sorting.

  4. Objects sorted into categories (2-5 categories).

  5. Final presentation with written information on paper, showing the categorized data.

Exercise 1 - Quantify & Visualize Data

For the first exercise, we are tasked with quantifying a selected object and organizing the data into a presentable layout or chart. I have chosen a custom hand chain for this exercise. Below are the initial images captured before the arrangement process.

Fig 1.1 Object before arrange (6/2/2025)

To begin, I organized the objects in two different ways. The first approach involved arranging them alphabetically while using varying colors. The second approach categorized them by color while maintaining different alphabetical orders.

Fig 1.2 Separate 2 ways (6/2/2025)

After completing the two arrangements, I organized the alphabets in a straightforward manner based on quantity, from highest to lowest, as a preliminary step before generating further ideas.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Shamsul, he suggested incorporating more creativity and playfulness into the design. I began exploring more imaginative ideas; however, due to time constraints, I was unable to complete the task during class and continued working on it at home.

Exercise 2 - L.A.T.C.H
For Exercise 2, we need to create a visual infographic poster that effectively organizes information using at least four LATCH principles (Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy). Using digital photo editing or illustration software, we will design and assemble the infographic while ensuring clarity and visual appeal. While existing images can be reused, we must create additional visuals to complete the poster, maintaining a cohesive and structured design. The final output should demonstrate a well-organized layout that enhances understanding through effective information visualization.

Requirements: Size resolution: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels.

L.A.T.C.H Information & Reference

After conducting research on the character for my infographic poster, I have also gathered reference ideas to guide the design process. Before proceeding with the actual layout, I plan to create simple sketches to explore composition and structure. For a more detailed overview of the information and references, please refer to the attached document.

After completing my research, I began sketching initial design ideas for the infographic poster. Based on the reference materials, I have developed three different concept sketches, each exploring a unique layout and structure. However, I will select the most effective design among them to refine and proceed with for the final poster.

Fig 2.1 Rough Sketch - JPEG (13/2/2025)

The three sketches explore different approaches to presenting the infographic. Sketch_01 features a dynamic layout with a circular timeline at the bottom, highlighting key events in the character’s journey. The character is illustrated in motion, and the skills and abilities are structured in a flowchart-like manner, creating an organic flow of information. This design emphasizes movement and storytelling, making it visually engaging while maintaining a structured presentation of key details.

Sketch_02 adopts a balanced and symmetrical design, placing the character at the center with the timeline on the left and skills and abilities on the right. The grounded platform beneath the character adds stability, ensuring a well-organized and structured layout. This approach creates a clear contrast between the character’s history and strengths, making it easier for viewers to process the information in a systematic way.

Sketch_03 takes a more minimalist and character-focused approach, with a detailed outline of the character as the main visual element. The role and class ("Duelist") are prominently displayed, while the biography and abilities are placed near the figure, integrating text and visuals seamlessly. The timeline runs along the right side, creating a straightforward narrative structure. This layout highlights the character’s identity and key attributes, offering a bold yet clean presentation. The final selection will depend on the preferred balance between character presence and information clarity.

Poster Design

After completing the initial sketch, I began searching for a suitable character to integrate into my design. The first step in this process involved removing the background from the original image to ensure seamless integration. Once the background was removed, I carefully positioned the character within the composition, aligning it with my chosen sketch to evaluate its suitability and ensure it complements the overall design.

After finalizing the character's placement, the next step was to design a name that aligns with its identity. I began by researching typography and font design on platforms like Pinterest and Behance for inspiration. However, rather than using an existing font, I decided to create a custom-designed name to enhance uniqueness and originality. For the first version, I opted for a white color scheme to establish a clean and striking visual presence.

Fig 2.3 Step 2 - JPEG (16/2/2025)

After finalizing the name design and selecting the initial color, I found that the white color appeared too simple and did not complement the character’s color scheme, which primarily featured pink and purple tones. To enhance harmony between the elements, I decided to incorporate a gradient into the name, blending colors that better matched the character. This resulted in two distinct versions of the name design. To further align with the cyberpunk aesthetic of the poster, I experimented with adding a neon background, enhancing the overall visual impact and immersing the design in a futuristic atmosphere.

Fig 2.4 Step 3 - JPEG (16/2/2025)

After testing both versions of the name design on the poster, I ultimately chose the pink and white gradient version, as it complemented the character’s color scheme more effectively. For the background, I replaced the previous neon design with a dark blue gradient, as the original background was too bright and did not blend well with the character. The simplified background helped maintain focus on the key elements while preserving the cyberpunk aesthetic.

Additionally, I began arranging the elements in the poster, ensuring the incorporation of at least four components from the L.A.T.C.H framework. I opted to use Location, Timeline, Category, and Hierarchy to structure the information effectively. Given the limited space available, I carefully planned the layout to ensure clarity and visual balance while maintaining an engaging composition.

Fig 2.5 Step 4 - JPEG (17/2/2025)

After finalizing the layout arrangement for the elements, I proceeded to incorporate the necessary information into the poster. However, during the design process, I began questioning whether my approach aligned with the principles of an effective information poster, as there are various stylistic approaches to consider. Additionally, I noticed that my design contained an excessive amount of text with minimal graphic elements, which could affect its visual impact and readability.

To address these concerns, I decided to complete the design first and seek feedback from Mr. Shamsul during Thursday's class. This review will help refine the composition and ensure that the poster effectively communicates information while maintaining a strong visual appeal.

Below is the completed version of the poster before the class. I have decided to present it to Mr. Shamsul for review and feedback. His insights will help identify areas for improvement, allowing me to refine and enhance the design for better clarity, balance, and overall effectiveness.

Refinement

After our Thursday class, my poster was reviewed by Mr. Shamsul during the feedback session. As expected, he pointed out that the design contained excessive text with too few graphic elements. He advised me to reconsider my approach by reducing the amount of text and incorporating more visual elements to enhance clarity and engagement.

Following the feedback, I conducted further research on infographic posters to gather inspiration for improving my design. To achieve a more balanced composition, I focused on minimizing text by replacing certain words with icons and logos, making the information more visually digestible. Additionally, I revised the timeline, which originally displayed the character’s transformation. To make it more dynamic, I incorporated images that align with each stage of the timeline.

Lastly, I refined the map on the right side, which illustrates the locations where the character previously resided. Instead of using detailed descriptions, I integrated a map design with relevant icons and logos to represent each place more effectively. These adjustments enhance the visual hierarchy while maintaining clear and structured information within the poster.

 FEEDBACK
Week 1
  • Don't make an artwork, arrange first then sort it with different characteristics.
  • Be more creative but need to clearly sort the information out.

Week 3

  • Not look like a infographic poster, need to be more specific
  • Too much text in the poster, need to reduce some text.
  • Not enough graphic element, need to add more graphic element.

 REFLECTION
During the first week learning about how to quantify raw data and visualize information. I was very lost during at the class i have no experience before, but after asking some question to Mr. Shamsul than i starting figure out some idea in my exercise 1.

During the exercise 2, i have learn about how to create a infographic poster, from start i also feel lost because also not have experience before, but after research and study some reference, there have many style of infographic poster, is very interesting during the learning section, at least i have unlock a new skill. I will be more better next time!
